Ever since I first came to know turmeric I have been in love with it. I remember when visiting India for the first time, I witnessed women drying turmeric on the roof next to my hostel, and how the earthy, unique fragrance reached me, and I instantly felt home.
It is rather strange when you think about it, this bright, yellow root growing deep in the dark soil. Where does this intense color come from? It seems to store the sun itself. No wonder turmeric is called “The Golden Goddess”, the physical essence of the Divine Mother.
She has so many health benefits that it would take years to highlight them all: warming, nourishing, loving, embracing, inviting, healing. And more than anything, she is known as a powerful anti-inflammatory spice, very supportive in these times of stress that are over-taxing the immune system.
I love to make a turmeric and veggie paste that I use daily in my kitchen as an easy way to connect with the qualities of the Golden Goddess. I use it for broth, soups and all kinds of dishes. It is also wonderful to blend with hot water or milk/mylk for a soothing drink.
When I use the golden veggie paste, I make it my meditation to connect with the nourishing, warming qualities, as I would receive a warm embrace from the Golden Goddess herself.
Instructions:
- Gather your ingredients:
2 cups carrots, cut in cubes (300 g)
2 cups celery stalks (200 g)
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2 cups celeriac root, cut in cubes (200 g)
1/2 cup ginger root, cut in cubes (50 g)
1/2 cup sea salt (160 g)
3 tbsp. olive oil
1/3 cup turmeric (5 tbsp)
1 tsp pepper (best pippali) - Blend everything until smooth. This recipe will make about 2 cups and is best stored in a 17 oz (500 ml) glass jar. You can keep it in the fridge for weeks as the salt will help preserve it.
- Warm your heart with the golden goddess (day or evening). Heat 1 cup (250 ml) water and add 1 tsp. paste. Drink it slowly and connect with her power. And remember it’s a delicious addition to soups, broths and other homemade creations!
